What specific benefits are there for collaborating with Citizen?‌

How long did it take to create the final design?‌
single_sparkle
That’s a good question. Once we decide on a theme for the watch, we try to find a watch case that’s a good fit as a starting point. Each watch face I work on is different. Some have sub dials; others have a date window. Another mandatory is that I work around the Citizen brand logo and “Eco-Drive” name, plus the actual Eco-Drive solar cells built into the watch, taking in light from the dial. Eco-Drive is Citizen’s proprietary technology, which sustainably captures any light to power their watches, eliminating the need for a battery and saving millions of batteries from landfills each year. I must know where those tiny areas are in the watch face, that charge the internal power cells, and be sure not cover them with my art.‌
With all that technical stuff on the watch face, I now can see the real estate I have to work with. When I start, I usually sit and stare at the blank watch case for a bit and let my creative brain off the leash. This is where I start piecing things together in my head even before I lay down a pencil line. We also need to figure out the watch band that will best depict the overall theme. Sometimes it will change depending on the final dial design.”‌

Go behind-the-scenes with Jeff Shelly on the “making of”‌
the Mickey Mouse Astronaut watch.‌

But once I get the green light to move forward, I will start doing a final pencil of Mickey. In this stage, I put him on model and making sure he has the correct proportion, etc. Since I worked at Disney for 28 years as the Character Art Director for Mickey Mouse and Friends (plus additional characters), the approvals go much faster since less has to be done on their side. Once I finish the tight it goes back to Disney for approval making sure everything is looking good before final inks for production. These characters are tricky to draw for everyone, even the most seasoned artists at Disney. They look so simple but one of the most complex characters to get perfect is Disney’s Mickey Mouse.”‌

It all goes back to celebrating Disney’s 100th Anniversary. The Director of Merchandising and Product Development at Citizen and I were brainstorming about popular events and highlights for Disney’s Mickey Mouse throughout the decades of the last 100 years of Disney. When we talked about the 1970’s and 1980’s, it was a no brainer we had to do a moon landing.‌
I’ve always been a big space and sci-fi fan, ever since I was a kid. I’m old enough now to remember watching the Apollo space missions on TV. I’m still fascinated about all the hard work that went into successfully landing on the moon in such a short time. I think that space suits are one of the best things humans designed, ever. Not just the function, but the overall look. Last year, at a dinner party with some friends, I got to hang out with a shuttle astronaut named Story Musgrave. I asked him so many nerdy questions, but the thing I remember the most is that he talked about how well those spacesuits were made and his hours he spent in ‌
them in space.‌
You must think of Mickey as an actor. He can be in outer space, or the bottom of the sea. A cowboy or pirate. The creative situations you can put him in are limitless. Drawing him on the moon was just plain fun! But if I’m working on a character like Winnie the Pooh, I need to keep in the 100-acre woods and can only interact with what’s in the environment, or what I can make from trees.”‌
What are the technical nuances of designing a watch face?‌
I’ll walk you through the process I went through for this watch, so you get a better idea of how long it took to get the final design.‌
Once we agree on the theme and watch case, I’ll do a few concepts, usually 3 or 4 ideas. I’ll do the concepts in color using Adobe Photoshop and make it as close to final as I can. This process can take a few hours, up to a few days. For this one it was about one day of concepting. Once I submit the concepts to Citizen, the director of Merch reviews the design. If she doesn’t agree with the concept, I go back to the drawing board for revisions or new concepts. We always joked about making a book of the watch concepts that were never made, including the ones that were too ahead of its time.‌
Once a concept is approved with Citizen, including its creatives, and business executives, it gets routed to Disney for their round approval with business and creative teams. This can take some time. But once back with their comments, I either have to make changes and resubmit or go to the final stages.‌
I started working with Citizen when I was still at Disney. We had a working relationship then, but nothing like it is now. So, when I left Disney, they tracked me down to start working directly on some new watch ideas. And the rest is history. I enjoy working with everyone at Citizen and feel part of their family, like Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch. They are all super nice and I especially love working with the merchandising and product development director, Beth Miller.‌
She is unlike anyone I’ve worked with in the past. She’s not one to just slap a Mickey on a product. She’ll push me to interact with the watch and tell a story. For the most part, she gives me creative freedom, but she’ll definitely let me know if I’m going down a rabbit hole with a design, or just plain doesn’t like it. We work amazing together and I feel like we raise the bar for Disney fans with each new Citizen timepiece we make together.”‌

Incredible Mickey Astronaut Watch

I am extremely delighted with this Mickey Astronaut Watch! It's the first Citizen watch that I have purchased, and I could not be happier with how beautiful it looks and operates. I have a small wrist (about 6-1/2"), but it was sized for free by Citizen Watch at the time of purchase, and it fit perfectly as you can see in the photo. It is indeed a large watch for a small wrist, but at age 72 with declining vision, a big watch face is ideal for me!

Amazing Astronaut Mickey

The watch is amazing; quality is superb, the design is so vibrant that I keep watching Mickey on his astronaut suit just for the pleasure of looking at him. Very accurate time, by the way.

Nice watch

It's something different than what's in my collection. It's more of a Fun Watch. My grandson thinks it amazing! It keeps good time and the Eco-drive is a great addition. The lune is great & the details on the dial are very detailed. I would have liked for the bezel to rotate and a few more stars with lume but those are just minor changes I would have liked to see.

Mickey Astronaut Watch

PROS: Super cool design!! Glows in the dark Has second hand CONS: Doesn't glow in the dark for very long-disappointing!! Back plate on watch NOT threaded correctly. The word "Disney" not lined up correctly; side to side, left to right. VERY DISAPPOINTING!! I took the watch to a jeweler but they could not align the back!
