With a history dating back over a century, Citizen has a large catalog of compelling vintage models worthy of your attention. This year, we’re teaming up with the vintage and pre-owned watch specialists at Analog:Shift in New York City to curate a capsule collection of pieces for the discerning collector.
While Citizen has a wide-ranging and compelling dive watch offering stretching back decades, certain vintage references are rarely seen on the secondary market. The ref. 4-520688-Y, which debuted in the late 1960s, is one such watch — colorful yet highly utilitarian, it’s one of our most interesting vintage timepieces, and this particular example happens to be in excellent condition.
Housed in a 39mm stainless steel tonneau-shaped case, it features a radially brushed surface with polished sides, a “C”-signed crown, and a rotating dive bezel with an aluminum blue insert featuring individual hash marks for the first 15 minutes and a luminous pip at 12 o’clock. Beneath an acrylic crystal, a silver sunray dial is flanked by a blue minute track with white printing and a useful no-decompression scale in orange with blue printing. Applied, luminous indices; a framed date window at 3 o’clock; a day-of-the-week window at 9 o’clock; and a luminous ‘sword’ handset with a red sweep seconds hand make for a highly legible picture of the time.
Paired to the ref. 4-520688-Y is a brushed stainless steel multi-link bracelet with polished center links and an unsigned folding clasp, while a screw-down caseback contains the watch’s reference and serial numbers; within the case, the automatic Citizen Calibre 5204 features 27 jewels and optional hand winding. With its colorful looks, helpful features, and rarity, this terrific Citizen diver is ideal for the collector who appreciates a bit of fun in their watch designs.
