With a history dating back over a century, Citizen has a large catalog of compelling vintage models worthy of your attention. This year, we’re teaming up with the vintage and pre-owned watch specialists at Analog:Shift in New York City to curate a capsule collection of pieces for the discerning collector.

In 1985, Citizen debuted the Aqualand. The first watch to include an electronic, digital depth gauge, its ana-digi interface had the ability to track not only the time and depth, but it could also store dive data such as maximum depth and bottom time, effectively making it among the first crop of digital dive computers. Perhaps unknowingly, Citizen had produced a true horological game-changer.

While dedicated dive computers debuted and evolved in the mid-’80s alongside the Aqualand, the idea of a wristwatch that could do the same yet be worn day-to-day as a conventional timepiece was a novel one. This particular execution, the reference C022-088034 Y, encapsulates perfectly what we mean: Measuring 51mm in stainless steel, its case is set with four buttons that allow for easy control over its myriad dive and timing functions. A unidirectional dive bezel with a black count-up insert provides more conventional timing functionality, while the ana-digi display with large, luminous hour indices; luminous hands with signature orange minute hand; and 12 o’clock LCD display provide copious amounts of data.

Powered by a quartz movement and paired to a black rubber dive strap with printed no-deco dive limits, this particular Aqualand boasts double the dive watch bona fides: Retailed by DACOR, an American dive equipment manufacturer that was acquired by Mares in 1999, it is proudly signed with the brand’s logo above 6 o’clock and ships with both its inner Citizen and outer DACOR boxes. For the diver and watch lover, it provides an exciting, functional totem to an important, transitional time in dive watch history.
